Freeman ( 2005 ) - Graphic Techniques for Exploring Social Network Data

چکیده
The spatial arrangement of social network data in graphs can influence viewers’ perceptions of structural characteristics such as prominence, bridging and grouping. To study the extent of this effect, we conducted an experiment with 80 graduate students. Each student viewed three of five different spatial arrangements of the same network. We found that viewers' perceptions of structural features of the network changed as the spatial arrangement of the network changed.

The Development of Social Network Analysis—with an Emphasis on Recent Events
In a recent book I reviewed the development of social network analysis from its earliest beginnings until the late 1990s (Freeman, 2004). There I characterized social network analysis as an approach that involves four defining properties: (1) It involves the intuition that links among social actors are important. (2) It is based on the collection and analysis of data that record social relation...

To uncover patterns of those kinds, network analysts collect and examine data on actor-to-actor ties. Such data record who is connected to whom and/or how closely they are connected. Typically, the data are organized into square, N-dimensional, N-by-N matrices where the N rows and the N columns both refer to the social actors being studied. Cell entries in these matrices indicate either the pre...

From 1960 to 1975, 20 articles about social network analysis were listed in Sociological Abstracts. From 1990 to 2005, the number was over 3000. No one today is more equipped to explain how this happened than Linton C. Freeman. Freeman divides the history of social network analysis (SNA from here on) into four eras: (1) everything up to the end of the 1920s; (2) the 1930s; (3) the 30 years from...

Here we introduce a computer-based visual display program, called MAGE. MAGE was designed to display molecules but we will explore its potential for application to the study of social networks. To do so, we will use MAGE to examine the structural properties of two data sets, friendship choices in an Australian college residence and peer choices among teenagers in a Dublin suburb. q 1998 Elsevie...
